Templestowe has had two notable waves of human settlement. The first occurred c. 40000 BCE, its history being preserved in legend amongst the tribes of the Kulin nation (a confederation of at least five language groups) via the dreamtime pathways.

The name Templestowe was chosen when a village was proclaimed. Its exact origins are unknown, although a “Templestowe” is mentioned in the book Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott—supposedly modelled after the Temple Newsam preceptory at Leeds.
