The first European to arrive at the place now known as Williamstown was Acting-Lieutenant Robbins, who explored Point Gellibrand with his survey party in 1803.

John Batman later inspected the mouth of the Yarra River in 1835 and led a party who recognised the potential of the Melbourne townsite for settlement. They named the site that became Williamstown original as Port Harwood, after the captain of one of their ships.

Williamstown is home to several Heritage buildings and sites including Williamstown Landing Place, Gem Pier & Commonwealth Reserve and Former Bay View Hotel.
